The logic behind unlocking the next item (content) upon completion of previous item (content)

For example Sololearn Python course. You must complete the basic concepts first to unlock the next one (strings). Then once you complete the strings part, the next one gets unlocked.
So what’s behind the scenes of that? (The PHP, SQL, login system).
