Built-in functions (Max min)

I cannot understand this expanation on textbook. [The max function tell us the "largest character" in the string max('hello world') w ] And I didn't get the output as same above Can you give me another good example easy to know what max function is in case Letter.

I think it is considered as 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'. ie. the rightmost one is larger. therefore in 'hello world', 'w' is the largest. in 'python', 'y' is the largest.
