Why in HTML, we have to start with < > and end with </ > ?

HTML was created keeping in mind that it should be easy to use. As HTML evolved, so did the tags, attributes,etc. Eventually it became as it is today starting with < > and ending with</ >. Please follow me since learning is Fun when we do it together.
