Don't ask them to upvote because usually you get the reverse outcome

There are no hard and fast rules to this. I once did a JS code that is just 2 lines: an alert box inside a for loop that pops the alert box 50 times, seizing your phone screen whilst doing so. Guess what, I got close to a 100 upvotes in a very short time. It was however put on private mode by some moderator because my code flouted one of sololearn's user policies I suppose.
On the flip side, I have some relatively more elaborate codes that are still struggling to get 50 upvotes.
Generally I think, web codes tend to get more upvotes than other types of codes. I also think the amount of followers one has also influences it.

Perhaps, showcase your knowledge through css styling and make it interactive (JavaScript). As it is now, it lack in this regard. A code with such has a potential to woe viewers rather than a mere code which suggests no effort put into the code. Make an effort to apply a number of concepts learnt.
For now, perhaps, be easy on yourself and pay less attention on gaining upvotes but on displaying your knowledge through your code. Once you do this, upvotes will come naturally.
