Python has amazingly many cool libraries for RPi, so it's an obvious choice.

Rpi is meant for python: don't get me wrong, you can program whatever language you want on the rpi but most of the time when you'll look for online tutorials, examples, reference you'll find shell and python. I wouldn't go for JavaScript on the rpi as the browser experience on is a bit laggy.
