It depends on what exactly you do. If you work with a language like Python or Javascript, you don't need to understand computers all too well. When you use languages that are 'closer to the metal', like C, understanding computers well becomes increasingly important. Same with the sort of code you write. If you just want to cook up a halfway pretty homepage, you don't need a lot of computer knowledge. If on the other hand you write system software, hardware drivers or whatever, logically you'll need deeper knowledge. Learning to program is a matter of years anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it. With study and practice, knowledge and skill will come.
