What open-source projects can a beginner get involved with?

Question

Having learned some coding, and exercising by partaking in challenges, I think it's time to sink my teeth into something real and meaningfull.

I would love to get involved in some open-source project. If I can contribute to creating something like entertaining educational games for primary school children, that will fulfill a desire very close to my heart.

Do you know of any such, or somewhat similar projects that a beginner can get involved in?
