5 is the version... if you want to compare you need compare two versions of html, no html and a version of html. Same for css versions... Anyway, comparing version is not very useful: you must target the latest versions of these language, and just be careful to implement only widely supported newest functionnalities (all are not implemented at same speed by each browsers vendors ^^). HTML5 is the latest version of HTML. Simple as that. There is a lot of stuff that is not available in HTML5 now and a lot new as well! HTML 4.0 was the previous version.
