These 2 will only be the same if your screen is only 100 pixels wide. The 50% means that the line you are displaying, for example, will have a length of 50% of the screen width. So if the screen is 900 pixels wide, the line will have a length of 450 pixels. 50p on the other hand, means that the line you are displaying will be only 50 pixels wide, no matter the width of the screen
