Making delay in php

Hi guys , I am looking for a function/method to make a # sec delay before the rest of the code runs. I am acquainted to sleep() but what it does is just wait the specified time and then run the whole code at once. I don’t want that. I want to run part of the code and show it on the front and then the rest of the code execute. Hope you get what i meant. Thanks for reading :)
