Just so that you notice: you are in a *C++* forum. Depends on what you want to do with what you learn. Applets are still in use and so are HTML and Java applications. If it's not about maximizing the potential money you can earn but maximizing your learning experience, just go with Java applications. They will teach you programming without much of a hassle.

No, if you think Swing is complicated, don't do GUIs in C++ as the tool support in the Java world is better since Java allows for introspection, which facilitates writing tools, and C++ pretty much doesn't.
