What do you mean? This is just what I know from a friend of mine who is an Ethical Hacker. Do you mean how do they make money? They are contracted ussualy by companies to try and find exploits in various things so that companies can patch them before anybody malicious can abuse them. Or what they do that is concidered ethical? Since a company contracts the hacker to test on themselves it is with concent of the company itself. I think the ethical part comes from trying to do good in finding issues before they are abused. Sorry I never asked my friend the specifics of his job but I’m sure someone else here is one who could go further in detail.

Every system that is not completely closed off from the world can be hacked. Mostly by mucking with the Internet data it receives. Companies hire people to hack their systems to prove they continue to protect the internal data. A single data leak can bankrupt the biggest company.

I used to bypass internal formalities to have my job done. If I needed something, I didn't care about ethic and I don't regret. Sometimes I think they guessed, but they pretended they didn't. However, I was aware of the risks and potential consequences.
