Cookies is like a file to store data about something like a shoppingcart

if you want to buy something on the internet it saves what you want in a cookie and next time you come back it is allready in your shoppingcart

for example you want to buy a flowerpot and you put it in your cart but then you have to make your pc off or something all data is saved and after you come back you can go on and your flowerpot is still in you cart
