The importance of JavaScript as a web technology can be determined from the fact that it is currently used by nearly all websites (if not saying all).
JavaScript helps web developers to make web pages dynamic and interactive by implementing custom client-side scripts. At the same time, developers can also use cross-platform runtime engines like Node.js to write server-side code in JavaScript.
You can even combine HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript to create web pages that look good across browsers, platforms, and devices. As stated before, JavaScript is also used to make the web pages interactive, respond to users instaneously, and create richer user interfaces, without less server interaction and so reducing server load.

Yes.
Although we have more languages to do frontend and backend stuff.
But a web developer is not a web developer till the time he/she don't know javascript. It is the most powerful language to create websites and I think it is the only language which can be used both for front end and backend.
