Yes it is , at least the basics of maths.With practical knowledge you will not go far, on the other hand with in-depth knowledge you can do more things.

There is no need to learn all the maths, you have to think smart and learn only what you need. For example you need discrete maths for sure. As regards problem solving yes its necessary a learner to be able to solve problems.

You certainley need to know what is going on. I am terrible at math but I make sure I am able to work through examples problems for loss functions, scoring functions and whatever else I encounter. For me it is all still very new. Lots of logrythems and dot products.
That being said, you can setup your enviroment with some tutorials and run other peoples code without knowning what you’re doing and getting a good result. I reccomend pyimagesearch if you are interested in learning ML. Thats how I am learning it :)
