it is a (somewhat abitrary) decision once made many decades ago. there used to be 4, 6 or even 7 bit systems, but those are obsolete now. there are many supossed reasons for us eventually ending up with an 8-bit system, but we can’t be sure. same goes for vhs over betamax or v2000.
