Can one get better by just studying and trying the codes on a smartphone

Phone is a good start to programming.
The biggest entry barrier that any beginner will face is setup of development environment or at least knowing how to run code in their machine. Add the complexity of OS variations on top of it as someone uses windows, some apple, some linux ( linux users won't need any help 😉) or maybe some other OS. I remember how scared I was of programming before knowing how to set up a dev environment.
Sololearn's biggest feat is breaking that entry barrier by allowing people to code in the most convenient manner (through phone and an app). There are many good programmers who have written awesome codes on phone and these great people come to my mind first bobbie , ᠌᠌brains and Coder . Definitely check out their codes/games written on phone and catch up with them for doubts related to development in phone even outside of sololearn app.
But I believe at some point we ll need to move to a proper computer with keyboard to go to next level.

It's possible, but incredibly inefficient. The rate of learning via a phone cannot begin to compare with the rate at which you can learn using a proper OS (Windows, MacOS, or Linux distro).
It's like asking the question, if I have a bicycle, can I travel from the east coast to the west coast of the United States?
The answer is yes. But you can get there much quicker with a motor vehicle.
For some, that motor vehicle could be a scooter, tiny car, SUV, sports car, bus, or even an airplane. It really depends on the individual. But any of those would be much preferred over a bicycle. 😉

I dont post any of my best code on sololearn... primarily because I hate writing code on my phone. I cant begin to understand anyone that thinks writing code on a phone is easier than a computer. More to the point; I also wouldn't recommend a phone over a computer no matter what skill level you are. There are so many things you need to learn to integrate with. Writing code on your phone barely scratches the surface.

Write it on whatever you have available. If all you have is a smartphone then yes write it on the phone.

If you are learning java install jvdroid. Way better than code playground.

And more, you can access your code everywhere (it is in your pocket). Because I don't know for you, but good ideas often come to me when I'm not not in front of my computer.
