Can anyone please provide me of a better text applications to use than notepad? Maybe one that pre-spels and gives line numbers?

Yes downloading now visually aid looks better than that of note++

You did html and java tutorial here - if you're doing Java I recommend Eclipse
For basic HTML Atom will do just fine, Visual Studio might be an overkill
