You need a key set of skills to stand out from rest 1.Version Control Quickly becoming a necessity for almost all developers. 2.Regular Expressions Saves you a hell lot of string parsing. Not a necessity, but great to have. 3.Command Line Know-How Let's face it, if you're going to be a (good) developer, then you must be ready to drop the GUI and hit the CLI. 4.Database Knowledge: SQL You can safely skip this skill, but you'll most likely run into creating software that require storing huge sets of info for a long time. You should at least know how to create tables, insert into rows, query tables, update columns. 5.Stack Overflow Not a "skill" per se, but as a developer, stack overflow will seem like a haven when you get stuck. What's Stack Overflow? A website where you get to ask all sorts of code questions regarding concepts you don't understand
