Before Html5, <hr> stand for Horizontal Rule, but Html5 defines a semantic meaning as 'thematic break'...
However, it's still displayed as horizontal line in today's browsers, but this can be change in futur ^^

<hr> tag is used for drawing a horizontal line.it stands for horizontal rule as you already know.whenever you want to separate some tags ,you use <hr> tag.i hope you have got the purpose of <hr> tag.
