What is the best way to get started on Github and get familiar with all of the features? Should you start with a template repo?

Best way is
Just create a project, work on it.
Once you're done working on it upload it to repo by using commands you will find on GitHub docs.
Then make several changes to projects and try pushing those updates on repo.
Then you can also try downloading full project which is directly available in git repo.
