How important is Wordpress to a web developer?

Do actual web devs use it? Is it considered "cheating"? How/Why do they use it?

not very I'd imagine.Depends on the client really. I've used it a few times for "cheap" clients. (ie husband and wife style businesses) But serious clients usually opt for a custom design. Depends on the budget at the end of the day.

I would for now. Learn all that first and then learn wordpress as then you will be able to unlock its true potential (wordpress is built using those languages). it is good to know wordpress as you will get more jobs. just be aware that as it is not your codebase you don't know about any security flaws or bugs it may have or present later due to an update so you must offer that caveat to your clients before proceeding with the work.

I see. So would you recommend I stay away from wordpress and just learn HTML, CSS, & JS (& PHP/SQL)? Thanks for responding @jay

Depends what type of developer, Ifyoure a freelancer do wordpress for sure since your clients would be small business owners or organizations or your friends If you want to work for a corporate company then master your frontend languages of choice and not so much wordpress since they dont use that :)
