How would you use coding to contribute to the society?

Every program that has been created has been to accomplish some need. Sometimes it's an assignment for a class, sometimes a program for an office, sometimes for hacking or penetration testing, just to name a few. Regardless of the original need there is usually some result that has made a job easier or exposed some fault or vulnerability. The hope is that something good happens next.
Personally my opinion forward progress is for the benefit of society. If my program fulfills a need and does it well then I have done my job.
