What's the best age to teach children programming?

I have some student of my own of age 5 to 10. I am thinking of teaching them the basic programming so that they may get interest in this. In school in their young age they don't teach programming instead teaches paint logo etc. And when they reach 8th grade and about to start programming lesson computer becomes optional so most student drops it. So before reaching 8th grade I want to give them some lesson so they may know the fun of programming. Or won't thier brain able to handle it.

I think basic HTML can be taught to students from 6th or maybe 5th ,it would make learning and understanding other high level languages taught in higher classes much easier

Start with scratch. Kids love it and gives them a good perspective on what programming is about. I think from 6 years on.

Personally, I taught myself BASIC from a book when I was 8, using a TRS-80 in 1979. Modern tools like Scratch should enable kids to start learning even earlier.
