Nope. That is a common misconception with linux. However, knowledge of the terminal can be useful to learn.

You could use linux without even touching the terminal (in ubuntu you could update the distro via the software update center instead of the terminal).

Of course if you use vim or nano as a text editor then the terminal will be your best friend. ;-)
