[historical note] Flash tried to stand in for websites for a while. Its language was ActionScript; I don't recall how it interfaced with JS.

It depends. There is haml.info out there.
Haml stands for HTML abstraction markup language, so it's an alternative, but at the end it's still transformed into HTML.

Yes, because you can define the skeleton of a web page only in HTML and this is what a browser can understand. Do not know about the future but yes as of now this is the only markup language available.
