Kotlin is new replacement for java. Kotlin is one such JVM compatible programming language that compiles down to Java bytecode and has really caught the attention of Android Community. Instead of browsing all the way down, according to me, by all odds it's Kotlin. ... Kotlin was actually created to be better than Java in every possible way.

According to Oracle's 6 month release cycle, Java 12 will come in March, and Java 13 will come in September, probably.

Dart is one of the "not yet so popular" language introduced by Google. Might have a good future.

The latest language would be ReasonML from Facebook the statically typed language which compiles into JavaScript, it is the latest I heard of, whether it will gain popularity or not, few can predict as many React developers are already moving to TypeScript and the next version of Vue.JS is presently being written in TypeScript.

Luis Oscar Might actually replace Java in 10-15 years, but both really count as part of the Java platform anyway since they are JVM languages. So Java investments will be safe. You can go for java first.

We may not be seeing new languages in the year, but sure there will be new libraries and frameworks. Some of these have a learning curve of a new language.
