Is C++ was originally read as C increment?

Our instructor told us that C++ was originally read as C increment instead of C plus plus back in 1860s. Is it true? I'm just curious guys.

Back in 1860, French was very en vogue, so people were saying 'incrément'.

No joke, I have heard some people say "double-plus C". Mostly older guys though.
