How can one participate in open projects

How would a new developer find and contribute in open source projects and would the existing development team support them if needed?

If the dev team isnt explicitly say they accept pull request or need a help, its hard to tell but we can directly contacting them if they dont mind. And in open source project we're not always need to be in the team. Based on their lisence we may be permitted to develop the project ourself (since its open-source), and i think it still count as contribute to the comunitty. For example MariaDB its a fork of MySQL, but being develop by its own community

Thank you taste. Where could one look for projects/teams/individuals that may need support. Could GitHub be a start and if so what should be looking for
