How far have we reached in self-driven cars?

Okay, I know this is not a programming question, but it has AI, ML, Deep learning etc. so I thought it would be all right to ask it here https://www.quora.com/unanswered/How-far-have-we-reached-in-self-driven-cars?ch=10&share=142a1245&srid=5jrkF Thank you

I'm not the most experienced with self driven cars and their how they're coded, but one of the coolest things I've learned about them is that they have been programmed to be able to detect the majority of objects around them and can use this information to predict possible crashes and avoiding anyone getting injured if possible. It's just really interesting to know that AIs are now at a stage where we can rely on them to save our lives, with them even being better at that than we as humans are right now.

The question probably went unanswered because it is both a moving target (likely to become out of date very shortly) and underscoped. It's hard to tell what kind of answer the original poster was expecting. What kind of answer were you hoping to get? 🤔 (The meaning of life is 42.)

That's good to hear, Deepesh Choudhary 🙂 I like Faisal's answer too. Would you mind marking the best answer then, please?

Waymo (Google's autonomous car arm) was approved yesterday by California DMV to operate driverless in CA (already happening in Arizona). Technology link (very simplistic software / sensor discussion): https://waymo.com/tech Announcement + where they plan on driving autonomously at their Blog link.
