BASIC coding query re syntax and strings

Hello. I have a query on some syntax in BASIC. I'm a beginner and am studying BASIC from a book. I have competed 2 of the practical programmes and I have a question on the following. What is specific about...
cha$(13)
and the use of and underscore when preceding a plus sign '+ _'
Doesn't seem to explain it in the book.

I used Basic about 20 Years ago. It is a really old fashioned Language. Why don't you try Python?
