Looking for beginner-friendly open source projects

I've been coding for a few years but I'd like to help an opensource project because I'd like to have experience to create my own project one day. Do you know any list of beginner-friendly open source project where I can both help and learn? I mainly use python and java but every project is accepted. Should I help in a project I'm using (as user) or should I try to help in a project I've never hears before? How did you become a real programmer instead of a learner? I'm not looking for a job but I can spend some time there

Daniele Bonomi Now is the good time start to learn and contribute to open source. This month, we have Hacktober fest, which open to coders to participate in contributing open source projects. If you submit 5 Pull Requests during October, you will have earned yourself a limited edition Hacktoberfest T-shirt . It's easy to join, I got my t-shirt last year, will going to participate this year. https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2018/09/30/hacktoberfest/

I think both options are suitable... If you are already familiar with a project, it may be easier and faster to figure out how things work; if you haven't used (and heard of) those projects, you can just like their idea and get interested, that's also good😊 Perhaps you'll find some interesting project here: https://github.com/MunGell/awesome-for-beginners
