There are two part to it. First is knowledge. Reading and learning about programming can help you to create more solid code. Then there is practice. Practice will help you understand the knowledge you've learned and how to apply them. But that does not mean you should neglect you own ability to solve problems. There are many out there that have multiple solutions. Using you mind to solve these problems is the most important tool a programmer (or anyone) should have. Try to solve your problem first, then search for solution if you are stuck. If you do so, I can guarantee that you will make yourself an excellent programmer. Sorry for the long reply.

Like Caleb said it takes a lot of practice. Like any skill it takes hours upon hours of practice. But there are plenty of ways you can practice. You can determine your programming level and compete in weekly programming challenges. Once those challenges become easy for you go to the next level (ex. Beginner, Intermediate, Pro). Another way to develop your skills is by building something (I know this seems obvious). Usually people tend to make something that will make their life easier. For example I made a tool in python that searches(parses) through a persons DxDiag file (.txt file) for specific items I needed for my job. I then made a UI system for the tool and displayed the information that the tool retrieves in a proper ticket format for my previous company. Essentially making a process that used to take 10 to 15 minutes to find all of the information we needed and reduced the time to less then a second. Good luck and most importantly have fun!
