Calviղ hacking is not stealing whatsoever, depending on the type of hacker. For example, I don't pentest for financial gain other than my paycheck, so is that stealing? No. This user may just want to be a penetration tester, not an immediate unethical hacker.

In reality the most successful hackers employ social engineering rather than technical knowledge. Because modern security systems are locked tight, the people holding the key become the main vulnerability. That said, studying C would probably serve you well since a lot of modern operating systems are written in C.
