I would say that specializing is a fantastic way to go in terms of anything you do. One skill mastered is worth fifty skills understood.

However, I do recommend to all beginners that they learn Python, as it is a strong language.

Really, this can be flexed either way. Python is a now-or-later language, whereas Java is still widely used and absolutely powerful.
