challenges on SL

Question

I'm confused how challenges work on SL. I see the badges, but I don't see where and how people are entering into the challenges. Could someone please explain this to me? What exactly are they and how do they work?

In the app, you can challenge someone in the second tab from the left.

Eliot Sanford Challenges its a feature of App version only (in Web version of SL are absents)

html or python. I'm not doing so well though. I need to work at this part. I'm good at figuring it out with no time constraints, but this element really means you know your stuff.
