Is HTML a programming language or markup language?

whenever I told anyone that m learning HTML when they asks me which programming language you have done , they just said to me that HTML is not a programming language. Is this really it?

A markup language is a language which is used to represent structured data. HTML is used to structure webpages. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. So yes it is a markup language and not a programming/scripting language
