Can Python be used to control traffic signals?

Had this idea of using pressure sensors at some distance as reference for traffic data and read and analyse the data for decision making of traffic signals specially for four way? I would like to know what are the steps to follow, a proper process to learn, as I am giving whole 2 months for it. Is Python useful in this case, if yes then which libraries will help? Or any other app which could help? (P.S working on Ubuntu Os)

Raspberry Pi more like a small pc, good for small projects. Difficulty is interaction with objects using Python is not yet possible I guess. All the hardwares are based on C and C++. So I am not able to connect this link. Maybe need to opt for something other than hardwares. I hope I am not confusing anybody. Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.
