The first assembler was written in 1947 by Kathleen Booth, FORTRAN was written in assembly language. Assembler is still used today and while the op codes used will vary with the target processor the structure and layout of assembly language code remains the same, as does the design of an assembler itself.

I would go with assembly, but don't know how much modifications were made.
