As I saw the old Steve Jobs movie, he wanted to be independent. didn't wanted to work under anyone. and he was very strict about how his product should be and how they work. Worked on things which were thought was not important by IBM at that time like LISA. Was able to convince people that apple products are identity of the people in the society.
